#artifact #lost-iron #cdm

A white ivory music box with gold trim. Written on the top in sparkly gold with a flowerly cursive script in the language Kheltivari is the phrase "To know without knowing".

Keywords: Magic

Inside the box on the left side is a set of silver and gold metallic gears, and steel comb connected to a needle. The needle reaches across to the right side of the device where there are twelve slots for disks. The needle can be slide over any of the slots. Special knowledge disks can be placed into the device that will grant specific pieces of knowledge (see below)

Musical Talent

The holder of this artifact is granted a deep understanding and skill with music. The bearer of this artifact is granted the Music skill for as long as they have the music box. Instead of a +2 to tests, it grants a +3. In addition the bearer can play any musical instrument or sing any song.

Listening to Music

The bearer of this box may choose to open the music box and play any of the knowledge discs within the device. While the device plays, the bearer has the exact knowledge for the disc is playing, but is unable to communicate that knowledge in any way to anyone else. They can make vague references, but any mention of proper nouns, major actions (up to GM Discretion) will emerge as a musical phrase, sung by the bearer if attempting verbal communication or written as musical notation if attempting written communication.

OH MY GOD. You won't believe that sings phrase and sings different phrase joined together and sings phrase to signs phrase.

When the music box is closed, a new knowledge disc is played, or if the bearer no longer carries the music box, the bearer loses most of the knowledge. The bearer (or former bearer) has a general gist of the knowledge but cannot recall major details or names.

Um yeah, I sort of remember. That one person and that other person joined together and did a thing to that third person.

Mastering Music

As a free downtime action the bearer and any number of willing creatures can listen and memorize the music of the music box. All creatures who memorize the songs in this way gain the knowledge of each knowledge disc they memorized. They are similarly restricted that they cannot use language to express that knowledge but only through song. Anyone who has memorized the same song can understand the song, allowing them to freely communicate.

After memorizing the song a creature must spend a free downtime action re-memorizing the song, or forget the knowledge at the end of the respite.

Trapping Knowledge

The bearer of the box is granted knowledge of Knowledge Trap trinket.

Knowledge Trap

A silver and mercurial disk with several small bumps that at first glance appear to be a disc for a music box.

Keywords: Magic Item Prerequisites: The tears of joy from hearing a beautiful song for the first time. Project Source: The Knowledge Trap Project Roll Characteristic: Presence or Intuition Project Goal: 450

Effect: When the disc is first assembled, a creature can have a piece of knowledge extracted from their minds and placed in the disc. Willing creatures will do it automatically; an unwilling creature must make a hard presence test to resist the extraction, if the creature succeeds the test the crafter must wait at least one hour before attempting again. If the disc is not finished within a year, the knowledge will return to the target creature.

When the disc is inserted into the music box it's knowledge is available following the rules laid out by Knowledge Trap.

Once created the discs can be destroyed (stamina 10). When a disc is destroyed, a large crack splits the disc in two, and a large soundwave erupts from the disc seeking the creature that destroyed it or the closest nearby creature. When the sound wave colides with the creature the creature hears the original song at such a loud volume it has the following effects:

  • The creature gains the knowledge trapped by disc and know its normally.
  • The creature is deafened by the sound wave for 1 month, and are hard of hearing for one year
  • The creature receives an ear worm of the tune, that they will never be rid of. For a month afterwards whenever they speak they can only sing the song, and when they write they can only write the musical notes.
  • The ear worm means they can never hear another song for the rest of their lives. No matter what music they hear, the ear worm will transform it into the original tune of the disc.

Maddening Earworms

Any creature who hears music played from the music box, but does not hold the box will develop an earworm for the song. The earworm will be cured by either bearing the music box or by memorizing at least one of the songs from a knowledge disc. Anyone who does not cure the earworm will slowly become obsessed with the music box and will attempt to acquire it.
